The Silchar Municipality was officially constituted in 1882. The functions of the Silchar municipality is to look after supply of drinking water, prevention of food adulteration, sanitation and health, public health and street light among many others.

The main objective of Silchar water resource division is the flood management work. As erosion and flood are the major problems faced by the state of Assam, the water resource department takes all possible steps to solve this problem. The rivers that comes under the jurisdiction of water resource division of Silchar are Sonai, Borak, Jatinga, Jiri, Chiri, Harang Madhura.
